About Roberta Collier-Morales
Art has been at the center of Roberta Collier-Morales’ life for as long as she can remember. From a young age, she dreamed of writing and illustrating children’s books, and that passion for storytelling continues to inspire her work today. As both an illustrator and fine artist, Roberta has spent decades exploring the many ways images can communicate emotion, imagination, and the shared human experience.
Her artistic journey has taken her through a wide range of creative disciplines, including children’s book illustration, fantasy art, botanical artwork, mixed media collage, pen and ink drawing, calligraphy, hand lettering, painting, and digital illustration. While her techniques and mediums have evolved over the years, one thing has remained constant: a deep belief in the power of visual storytelling.
A Creative Life Shaped by New York City
Living in New York City was one of the most influential chapters of Roberta’s life and artistic development. The city’s energy, diversity, creativity, and humanity provided an endless source of inspiration. She often describes those years as earning a “doctorate in humanity,” where every street, neighborhood, and encounter offered a new perspective on life.
Roberta lived in the very buildings that inspired the play and film Rent, an experience that immersed her in a vibrant community of artists, dreamers, and creators. The people, education, and cultural experiences she encountered during her years in New York continue to shape her artistic voice and inform the stories she tells through her work.
Creative Philosophy
One of the most important lessons Roberta has learned throughout her artistic journey is that creativity rarely follows a straight path. Some of her most meaningful work has emerged from unexpected detours, happy accidents, and moments when the creative process led somewhere entirely unplanned.
She views imagination as one of life’s greatest gifts. In a defining moment while walking the quiet halls of The New School in New York City, she found herself expressing frustration about having “only” a big imagination. In the stillness, a simple question seemed to answer back: “What do you think your imagination is?”
That realization became a cornerstone of her artistic philosophy. Imagination is not merely a tool—it is a gift, a source of inspiration, and the foundation upon which all creativity is built.
